ILP "Participation" - Lynda Tutorial - Browse the Web Safely
The ILP I participated in this time was a Lynda.com tutorial on how to traverse the web in a safe manner. With the growing use of technology there will also be a growing amount of risks. The data we share on the internet via social media sites and meta data from just browsing can be used to steal passwords or identities. This tutorial went over concrete ways to make the browsing experience safer. It also touched on the ways to stave off hackers from any smart devices a person might have in their house. There are so many areas that might be exploited and this video covered almost all of them with great depth.
Above is a screenshot of the categories they covered. They even included ways to protect your security physically like locking your screen when not using a device or putting an identification sticker on the device in case it's lost. Some of the recommendations in the tutorial I actually already use, but there were many where I was lacking or was completely vulnerable. I really enjoy the Lynda.com tutorials and will make good use of it in the future. It is very dangerous to browse the web without taking the proper precautions, so this tutorial is a useful tool.
While this tutorial offers extremely helpful information it is only the beginning of securing oneself browsing the web. Almost any device that is connected to the internet is a pathway for someone to access personal information. With the steps this tutorial guides you through it brings a person closer to browsing the web safely. It does mention some aspects of web sites that will require one's ad-block and other security measures to be deactivated, but for the most part the security features don't hinder web browsing at all. It is necessary to use the tips from this tutorial, but also include extra measures that weren't covered. One cannot be too secure when it comes to browsing the internet because there are plenty malicious actors willing to take advantage of an unprotected system.
